Many people worry that they will start getting lots of junk mail if they enter sweepstakes. I have been entering sweepstakes for about 16 years and while I do get lots of email I don’t get what I would consider junk mail because of entering sweepstakes.
What is the difference between regular mail and junk mail?
Regular mail or email is something you have requested. You either signed up to receive a company’s email newsletter or you opted in to receive mail from them through the post office. Junk mail is unwanted and unrequested email in your Inbox or mail in your postal mail box.
How can you reduce the amount of email or regular mail you get?
When you enter a sweepstakes sometimes the company who is sponsoring the sweepstakes will ask you to sign up for their email newsletter. They may ask you if you would like to receive mail from them in postal mailbox or if you would like offers from “third party companies”. If you do not opt out or remove the checkmark in the box next to that wording you will receive their email newsletter and/or mail through the post office. It is your responsibility to be aware what the company is asking you on the entry form. Many times signing up for their email newsletter is optional and it will never help you win a prize by signing up so you can take the checkmark out of that box. It is usually clearly stated what is required. However, many people just click Submit without reading. When you do that and you receive email or mail from those companies it is then not considered junk mail because you have stated that you want to be contacted by them. You can usually unsubscribe easily from an email newsletter by looking for the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. Getting mail to stop coming to your house is a little harder to get out of. You will usually have to write to that company or find the right email address to write to and tell them to take you off of their list. You may find the email address or mailing address to write to right in the Official rules.
By reading carefully what is written on the entry form page you will eliminate almost all junk mail from your email Inbox or your postal mailbox.
