“Once Upon a Disney Time” my bride and I want to visit the Disneyland Resort and Magic Kingdom for the first time. Since I just celebrated my seventy-fourth birthday and my bride her sixty-first we would like to revisit our youth a bit. We will be married May 4th, 2013 here in Highland, Indiana.
Some years ago I was privileged to work with Joseph D’Agelo in Chicago at Wilding Motion Picture Studios from 1964 until 1969 as a full-time staff artist doing backgrounds, illustrations, slide-films, special effects, stop-motion, set-design, storyboarding, layout, lettering, type-setting, hot-stamping, inking, Opaquing, airbrushing, animation, and making props for stage sets. I was about 25-years old back then and Joseph retired around 1968.
Joseph worked with Walt Disney in Kansas City when they were both just starting out and he relayed stories of those days while we worked together. I was the youngest on staff and had the booth next to Joe’s. Those were some of the best days of my artistic career, until Bell & Howell bought out the studio and turned eleven of us out of thirteen on the street with two weeks severance pay and a bonus for the number years of service. The Art Director and an Assistant Art Director stayed on to deal with free-lance artists. We had prepared art for video and film presentations: industrial, educational, entertainment; both commercial and military. I would like Sheila, my bride, to see how early animation was accomplished, as I understand you have a building or exhibit dedicated to showing how it all worked frame by frame under an Oxberry Camera (or similar camera) with pegs for registration and numbered animation sheets.
I bugle for Bugles Across America, being a member of the Bugler’s Hall of Fame, in my retirement and sing with the “Just for Fun Ukulele Strummers”; entertaining at nursing homes, hospitals, luncheons, dinners, whatever. As American Legion Post 66 Official Bugler I provide the Final Salute for veterans of all USA service personnel. Singing and playing my horn keeps me young and active.
Sheila, my bride, refuses to fly, so we will drive to Florida arriving sometime after May 6th, 2013. This “Honeymoon” will be memorable for both of us; it’s just that it would be extra special if we had help with our expenses. We would always remember “Once Upon a Disney Time” and relay that wonderful time to anyone who would be willing to listen to our magical tale of adventure.
