When I’m not posting sweepstakes or entering them to win prizes, I love to watching PBS shows on my TV and my iPad. If I miss an episode I bring up the PBS app on my iPad and catch up. I love Downtown Abbey, Upstairs Downstairs, Miss Marple, and anything on Masterpiece Theater. I love the intrigue of Poirot and the romance of an age gone by. I also love the British accent and the outfits they wear in the shows. You can also watch some of their episodes on the PBS website.
This past few months, a new show has aired on PBS channels, entitled, Call the Midwife. The last episode just aired for the season on Sunday but I hear they will be having a holiday special so I’m so looking forward to that. This miniseries is an absolute must see. Based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, it has characters that will enter your heart and have you thinking of them for days.
If you haven’t had a chance to watch it, let me tell you a little bit about this new series.
The Call the Midwife is a look into the colorful world of midwifery and family life in 1950’s East London through the eye of Jenny Lee. Jenny comes to the East End and find poverty and a way of life she isn’t used to. She is running from an affair with a married man she wants to forget so you always see a little bit of that longing in her character. Jenny Lee arrives at the Nonnatus House to live and work as a midwife alongside an Order of Nuns.
The characters in this series are complex and the story shows you a way of life you never thought about before. Starring newcomer Jessica Raine as Jenny, the cast includes Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart and Judy Parfitt. Three other new faces, Helen George, Bryony Hannah and Laura Main complete the regular ensemble cast.

BBC Home Entertainment brings the critically acclaimed BAFTA nominated British drama, Call The Midwife: Season One, on Blu-Ray/DVD which is on sale November 6, 2012. You can also buy the original memoir by Jennifer Worth on Amazon.com
The series is based on the bestselling memoirs of midwife Jennifer Worth and is set in East London in the 1950s. It’s a beautifully acted period drama in the order of Downton Abbey, but it is also a fascinating look at women’s healthcare and the people who help mothers bring their children into the world under difficult conditions.
