Sweeties reader Amy asked if it is “necessary to check the box to receive promotional emails in order to win a sweepstakes.”
The answer to this question is a definite Yes and No!
IF there is an asterisk or some other indicator on the entry form that says you must sign up to be entered the answer to the question is Yes.
Most of the time signing up for the newsletter, to get promotional materials, to have “carefully selected” third party offers sent to you, or filling out the survey questions is optional so then the answer to the question would be No.
Here is an example of an optional survey. If you look at the entry form on this Dawn Direct Sweepstakes there are asterisks next to the required information. The survey does not have those asterisks so it is totally optional. The newsletters to sign up for on this page do not have asterisks so they are optional.
Just look for those indicators and you will know whether you have to sign up for a newsletter or fill out survey questions to enter.
Most newsletters will give you the option to unsubscribe anyway so signing up isn’t all that bad. And, many new sweepstakes are advertised first in company newsletter so they can be helpful to get. My suggestion is to sign up for a separate email address just for entering sweepstakes.
