Eligibility: US, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, 18/age of majority and older, and the parent or legal guardian of a child between the ages of eight and twelve.

The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids’ “State Dinner” 2015

In order to be eligible, lunch recipe submissions need to be created by a child between the ages of 8-12 and should follow the MyPlate nutrition guidelines: Fruits and vegetables should make up about half of the recipe or dish, and it should also include whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy. Submissions must include information about how and why they were created and be:
- Healthy
- Creative
- Affordable
- Delicious
- Original
Each entry must include:
- the title of the recipe
- a brief essay giving some details about the recipe (e.g., how did you come up with it? Like MyPlate, how can you make half your plate fruits and vegetables? What would you serve with your recipe so that you can include all or most of the major food groups, as detailed on ChooseMyPlate.gov? Would you include on the side a fruit, veggie, lean protein, whole grain or low-fat dairy? Is your recipe gluten-free, lactose-free or nut-free?)
- an ingredient list in order of use with exact measurements given in common U.S. household measures (all ingredients must be commonly available at local retailers and must be referred to by generic name, not brand name)
- step-by-step preparation instructions, including cooking times
- the number of servings the recipe will make
- a photograph or drawing of the completed dish (photographs must not depict the Child or any other person)

Entry Limit: one entry per child
Fifty-six (56) Prizes: two round-trip coach airfare tickets from the major commercial airport nearest the winner’s primary residence in the U.S. to Washington D.C. and one standard hotel room (double occupancy) for one night at a hotel selected by Sponsor. ARV: $1,200, depending on exact itinerary
Judging Criteria: 50% healthy nutritional value of the recipe (making half the plate or recipe fruit-and-vegetable based, and incorporating lean proteins and low-fat dairy and whole grains into the recipe and/or dish); 25% taste (this element will be scored on perceived taste for the initial round, and in the second round, on taste tests of the finalists’ recipes as prepared in a test kitchen according to the instructions in the finalists’ Submissions); 15% creativity and originality; 5% affordability; and 5% the essay accompanying the recipe.
